Repost from Discord – Additional Information About the Breakaway Phase

After nearly two years of collaboration, the maintainers of IW4x have decided to part ways with AlterWare. I was not informed of this decision in advance, I found out alongside the rest of the community via an @everyone announcement from an IW4x maintainer. To be honest, I haven’t heard from the IW4x maintainer in quite some time, probably months, because they’ve been inactive, likely busy with other, more important things. We were caught off guard by the news.
From the beginning of our collaboration, we made it clear that IW4x and AlterWare were independently maintained. This structure was intentional, meant to ensure that if either project was ever impacted by external factors (as seen in the XLabs/SM2 situation), the other could continue to operate independently. However, this current situation is different: the IW4x team has simply chosen to end the collaboration.
Because this change was unexpected, it brings with it a degree of uncertainty about how things will unfold from here.
If you’re here to play IW4x-SP, IW5-Mod, IW6-Mod (IW6x), S1-Mod (S1x), or T7x (BOIII), please refer to the client installation guides found on this forum (see “Documentation”). You will need to manually remove the old AlterWare (exe) files from your game folder and download the latest launcher from our GitHub GitHub - alterware/alterware-launcher: AlterWare.dev updater & launcher | Call of Duty mods
If your focus is on playing IW4x Multiplayer, you can continue using the current launcher in your game folder. However, please note that I won’t be able to provide further advice for IW4x MP specifically. It appears the IW4x team may release their own dedicated launcher for multiplayer in the future.

Today, I’d like to provide some additional information regarding the ongoing breakaway phase.
The old AlterWare Launcher has been updated to assist with this transition. Here’s what to expect:
- If you try to launch any client other than IW4x Multiplayer (MP), the old launcher will automatically upgrade itself to our newer launcher.
- If you launch IW4x MP, the launcher will prompt you to switch to the new IW4x MP infrastructure, which includes updating your game files and the launcher itself.
Once this migration step is completed, the correct launcher version should be present in your game folder, ready for use.
We regret that the IW4x maintainer chose to take this action without notifying us in advance and instead proceeded without warning. We do not believe this was a good or collaborative decision. That said, it is ultimately their project, and they have now decided to move the IW4x community to a new Discord server under their direct management.
We strongly disapprove of how the maintainer used the permissions entrusted to them through their Discord role to facilitate this move, an action we can only criticise so much because it was a breach of trust. Regardless, we wish the best of luck to everyone involved in this new phase of the IW4x project.
